Teens in Oak Park will soon have one less reason to complain about having nothing to do.
On Wednesday, February 6, 49Lake Teen Center will officially open its doors. Developed
by the Park District of Oak Park, the teen center is designed to provide low-cost
recreational opportunities to Oak Park teens. The facility is located in the lower level of Stevenson Center (hence the name) in Oak Park. The majority of the operating hours will be dedicated to drop-in activities where teen center members and their guests can come to play pool, check their e-mail, watch a movie, grab a snack, or just hang out with their friends. On weekends and other special dates, the teen center will offer a variety of special drop-in events like movie nights, open-mike nights, video game tournaments, etc. which will be open to all area teens at a small cost. Middle school and high school students (grades 6-12) living in Oak Park are eligible for membership, which is $25/year and runs from Sept-Aug. Teens that live outside of Oak Park or Oak Park teens without memberships are welcome to come to the teen center as a guest with a member for $3/visit. Once the teen center officially opens for drop-in hours on Wednesday, February 6, operating hours will be: Tuesdays-Thursdays: 3-6pm; Fridays: 3-11pm; and Saturdays: 1-11pm. As mentioned earlier, on select Friday and Saturday nights, the teen center will be holding special events, in which case, drop-in hours will end at 8pm. Teens will have the opportunity to get a sneak preview of the teen center on SuperBowl Sunday (February 3) when the teen center hosts a SuperBowl party. The event is free for teen center members and only $3 for non-members and features a Madden football video game tournament, plenty of food, the big game on the big screen, and access to all of the teen center amenities. The center will open at 1pm with the video game tournament starting at 2pm. For more information or find out how you can get involved, e-mail Bobbi or give her a call at (708) 725-2110. |
